Beninese dictator and former president of Benin that was once the seat of a poweful medieval African kingdom after the former French colony underwent a series of military coups between 1960 to 1972 when he took power in a coup and lead a Marxist regime for nearly 20 years who later cast himself as a champion of democracy overseeing West Africa's first peaceful transfer to power at the ballot box in 1991 elections, which he lost but who won back the office in 1996 and emerged victorious again in 2001, then stepped down after the 2006 elections.
