Summary: West Saharan singer and lyricist considered as one of the leading artists in the Saharawi music scene whose protest songs on behalf of her Sahrawi people in north Africa brought her international recognition who had usually sang in Hassaniyya (an Arabic dialect spoken mostly in Western Sahara and Mauritania) and occassionally in Spanish because her use of the Spanish language was related to the former status of Western Sahara as a Spanish colony, but who took part in a series of Womad music festivals around the world between 2008 and 2010, including appearances at Charlton Park in the U.K. in 2009 with visits to Australia and New Zealand the following year after her international reputation flourished and who had spent much of her life in a refugee camp in southwest Algeria for a number of years.
