judge who was the first female chief justice of the Kansas Supreme
Court when she was appointed to the Supreme Court in 1977 by Gov.
Robert Bennett as the first woman on the high court and became the
court's first woman chief justice in 1955 in a position she held until
retiring in 2009, and whose 31-year tenure on the high court is among
the longest on record.
