Summary: mentally-ill failed assassin who in September 1958 stabbed Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. at a Harlem book signing during which the stabbing nearly cost King his life requiring hours of delicate surgery to remove the blade (a seven-inch ivory-handled steel letter opener), which had lodged near his heart and later memorialized the attack in his "I've Been to the Mountaintop" speech delivered in Memphis on April 3, 1968 (the day before he was assassinated by James Earl Ray), who was diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia and was committed to the first of a string of mental institutions and resident-care homes.
