Summary: Russian Soviet-era breaststroke swimmer and Olympic champion who made history by becoming the first Soviet swimmer to win a gold medal when she accomplished this feat during the women's 200-meter breaststroke at the 1964 Summer Olympic Games in Tokyo, Japan but who had distinguished herself by setting five world records during the course of her career (in addition, she earned two silver and two bronze medals including one each at the 1968 and 1972 Summer Games) and was also inducted into the International Swimming Hall of Fame in 1977.
