Summary: Norwegian convicted murderer whose conviction to life imprisonment for the rape and murder of 16-year-old Rigmor Johnsen in 1958 marked the beginning of one of the most controversial cases in Norwegian criminal history who had continuously claimed his innocence while serving 16 years in prison before being released in 1974, in which the case became the subject of the 1972 play The Torgersen Case by author Jens Bjorneboe and was prominently visible in Norwegian public debate both in the 1950's, the 1970's, the 1990's and in recent years after his calls for resumption of proceedings were denied by the Supreme Court in 1976 and 2001, and again by the independent Norwegian Criminal Cases Review Commission in 2006.
