French veteran Gaullist politician and former interior minister of France who was a close ally of former president Jacques Chirac when he first served as interior minister under Chirac's prime ministership from 1986 to 1988 and again from 1993 to 1995 under the government of Edouard Balladur, who is mostly remembered for having pushed a series of anti-immigration laws (known as the Pasqua laws) and for his declaration "we will terrorize the terrorists" as he spent more than half a century at the heart of French politics in a career punctured by no-nonsense policies targeting terrorism but overshadowed by funding scandals.
