Alabama state trooper who in 2005 finally acknowledged that he was the
former Marion, Alabama police officer who in 1965 shot and killed
24-year-old black laborer and church deacon Jimmie Lee Jackson in a
local cafe as the shooting provoked the fateful voting-rights march
from Selma to Montgomery turning the tide for the civil rights
movement, but the crime itself was largely ignored for more than 40
years and justice was deferred for Jackson before he was indicted on
charges of murder by a grand jury in 2007 when he pleaded guilty to
misdemeanor manslaughter, apologized, and served five months in jail
while claiming self-defense.
