Summary:
the first democratically elected president of post-Communist Hungary who was charged with treason and sentenced to life in prison by Hungary's Communist-era authorities for taking part in the abortive anti-Soviet uprising of 1956, but who was released in 1963 under a general amnesty aimed at easing tensions with the West and was later elected to a five-year term as president by the parliament after free elections that ended 40 years of Communist rule in 1990, and who was re-elected for another five years in 1995.
