Summary: Iranian-born Australian self-styled Muslim cleric and hostage taker who was responsible for the chaotic December 2014 Sydney hostage crisis which resulted in the death of two hostages (cafe manager Tori Johnson and customer Katrina Dawson were both killed in the siege) during an exchange of gunfire with police officers who stormed the Lindt Chocolate Cafe located at the Martin Place pedestrian mall in Sydney's central business district, where he held an estimated 15 people captive for at least 16 hours inside the cafe when the standoff occurred, who has a history of Islamist agitation and later converted from Shia Islam to Sunni Islam earlier this year after he had sought political asylum in Australia in 1996 (which was granted in 2001) while he was facing a raft of violent criminal charges related to his ex-wife's murder in April 2013 as well as dozens of sexual assault cases prior to the hostage-taking incident.
