Summary: New Mexico lawyer who was found to have nearly lost his life to the first case of bubonic plague for more than 100 years during a visit to New York in November 2002 and was hospitalized for more than two months before he fell into a coma (both of his feet were amputated because of gangrene), whose illness was prompting alarm in New York that the infection might have been caused by bioterrorism in the aftermath of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, but who was recently diagnosed with a rare cancer unrelated to the plague earlier in May 2014.
