Summary: opera singer who rose from supporting parts as a mezzo-soprano to international recognition as a soprano in the operas of Wagner and Richard Strauss, who made her debut at the San Francisco Opera as Theresa in Bellini's La Sonnambula in 1960 when she was just 21 years old and also won a $2,000 scholarship from the Metropolitan Opera National Council Audition in 1962 as well as a contract to sing at the Met before she ultimately gave nearly 150 performances with the Metropolitan company.
