Dr. Irving Peress
Summary: New York
dentist who was drafted into the Army in 1954 whose seemingly routine
promotion from captain to major became a Cold War battle cry and
spurred a nationally televised congressional investigation when U.S.
Senator Joseph R. McCarthy contended that Peress's promotion had been
directed by Communists in his relentless anti-Communist campaign, in
which the chant "Who promoted Peress?" rumbled across America and
unltimately claimed the jobs of several top Army officials, but cost
much of his private dental practice in Queens, New York.
