Summary: Chinese pro-democracy activist who was branded as one of the "black hands" behind the massive pro-democracy uprising in Tiananmen Square in 1989 that was crushed by Chinese government tanks, who was convicted of sedition in 1991 and spent about 13 years behind bars or confined to his apartment before Chinese authorities released him in 1994 in response to economic pressure from the U.S. but imprisoned him again in 1995 after he staged a 24-hour hunger strike commemorating Tiananmen.
