Summary: former union minister of India from 1990 to 1991 whose ministry attracted adverse attention for the media censor policy during the Emergency period, which had got him some odium as propagandist for outgoing Indian prime minister Indira Gandhi's government when freedom of speech was under attack and who had been reportedly hospitalized in critical condition from multiple gunshot wounds and other injuries suffered in a May 25 Naxal-led insurgency attack that killed at least 25 people including former state minister Mahendra Karma and Chhattisgarh Congress chief Nand Kumar Patel while he was among a convoy of senior congress party leaders travelling through the Darbha valley when they convoy was ambushed by approximately 250 Maoist Naxalite guerillas.
