Summary: Ghanaian renowned poet and author whose work combined the poetic traditions of his native Ewe people and contemporary and religious symbolism to depict Africa during decolonization, but who had also held a distinguished career as a diplomat, statesman, scholar, and cultural icon during his academic stint as a professor of African literature at the University of Ghana from 1968 to 1975 and a former ambassador to Brazil, Cuba and the United Nations.
