Summary: Australian Olympic champion freestyle swimmer who had quickly rose to prominence after breaking a string of age group records when she represented Australia as a 15-year-old in the 4x1000 metres relay at the 1956 Summer Olympics in Melbourne and became the first Australian women's team to win Olympic gold medal alongside Australian teammates Dawn Fraser and Lorainne Crapp, but who had retired from competitive swimming soon afterwards because she cited anxiety caused by racing as one of the main factors in her decision.
