Ali Maow Maalin
Summary: Somalian prominent health worker considered as being one of the "true heroes" of polio eradication in recent years who became the last known person to be infected with naturally occurring Variola minor smallpox in the world when he was struck with the virus in October 1977 whilst working as a hospital cook and made a full recovery, in which an aggressive containment campaign was successful in preventing an outbreak before smallpox was declared to have been eradicated globally by the World Health Organization (WHO) two years later.
