white supremacist and member of a racist skinhead group called East Side White Pride who was sentenced to life in prison after he was convicted of first-degree murder for his role in the beating death of 28-year-old Ethiopian immigrant and graduate student Mulugeta Seraw with a baseball bat on a Southeast Portland street corner in November 1988 in one of Portland's most notorious hate crime that shocked and galvanized the city and led to a civil trial that riveted the nation, but who was still being referred to as a "prisoner of war" by white power groups for many years after his incarceration.
