Summary: prominent defector and outspoken critic of the infamous People's Temple church headed by religious cult leader Rev. Jim Jones who with her husband Al Mills (formerly known as Elmer Mertle) and Timothy Stoen co-founded the Concerned Relatives of Peoples Temples Members, a support group for Temple defectors and their families whose organization eventually persuaded U.S. Representative Leo Ryan to undertake a fact-finding mission to the Temple's Jonestown settlement in Guyana, which ultimately led to Ryan's murder and the mass murder-suicide at Jonestown on November 18, 1978, who published a memoir entitled Six Years with God: Life Inside Rev. Jim Jones's Peoples Temple in 1980 about her experience in the People's Temple and established the Berkeley Freedom Center with her husband.
