Summary: cultist and former follower of the Heaven's Gate cult who had been in and out of the group since 1975 before leaving in 1995 and served as spokesman for the Away Team, a group of former Heaven's Gate members who staged a public showing of a videotape by Marshall Applewhite, the cult's leader who perished along with 39 cult members last year at a mansion in the posh San Diego suburb of Rancho Santa Fe, who unsuccessfully attempted suicide nine months earlier in an Encinitas, Calif. motel room by taking alcohol and phenobarbital with another former cult member with him at the time 56-year-old Wayne "Nick" Cooke died in a similar ritual of death, who controlled the cult's now-defunct Web site and contracted with the Garis Agency in San Marcos, Calif. to represent him in his effort to sell his life story for a book or a movie after his previous suicide attempt.
