Entry: a genus of immense South American aquatic plants with large spreading leaves that are often over 5 feet in diameter and have a rim from 3 to 8 inches high, extremely large rose-white flowers opening for several successive evenings, and edible seeds.

Origin: Named after Queen Victoria (d. 1901).
